But why is he doing it? Good question.

When he first told friends of his plans, he says he had no clue what the answer was. He just felt it was something he had to do. "I'm still kind of fuzzy on the whole, exactly, 'why' thing," he says.

One part, he says, is simply the love of travel. It's a chance to see new places closer-up than is possible in a car. A second part — probably the most significant — is that for Gallagher, this trek represents a rite of passage. "I have this really kind of sick feeling that my whole life I've had my hand held for every part of it," he says. "I feel like I've accomplished a small amount, you know, but I really want to do something that's 100 percent me, and big."

My name is Joe and I'm a contributor to Mike's blog about his cross-country walk. I just wanted to stop by and let everyone know (although I'm sure it's obvious) that I've been working with Mike to bring a bright new look to the blog's theme. It's based on a theme by PT--all we really did was flip the colors from dark to light. In other exciting news, Mike has made a public map of his route

I am really excited and really apprehensive as Mike's departure approaches, so I can't imagine how he must feel.

I'll be doing my best while he's on the road to help him stay in touch with Philly and the interwebs.

In the meantime, follow him on:

Twitter - http://twitter.com/thewalk2010 (won't start updating frequently until he leaves, but follow now!)

I have 39 days until the walk begins. Everything is starting to move from the back of my head to the forefront of my mind, and its freakin me out a little, I can not lie.

My good friend is walking across the United States, all alone, this year and he's leaving quite soon.
